Stable genetic transformation of the Cannabis sativa – hemp – plant recently was achieved by Trait Biosciences Inc. It’s believed to represent the first time a hemp plant has been stably transformed and successfully grown roots and stems, according to the company.
The achievement is the foundation on which the company will be able to develop strains of hemp and cannabis with novel traits, said Richard Sayre, chief science officer for Trait Biosciences. That includes the company’s Amplified technology. Plants grown with Amplified are expected to have more trichomes and greater photosynthetic efficiency. They are expected to generate cannabinoid yields two to five times greater than conventional plants for whole-plant extracts. Plants developed with the technology also may produce water-soluble cannabinoids, which have greater bioavailability and onset time than fat-soluble cannabinoids, according to Trait Biosciences.
