The first Monroe County Fair was held in 1858 in Sparta, Wisconsin. Interest in the fair waned and then was revived several times during a 70-year period. Some years no fair was held at all. The last of the Sparta fairs was held in the 1930s.

Meanwhile in Tomah, Wisconsin, an organization called the Eastern Monroe County Agricultural Society was established in 1869. The group held its first fair in 1873; annual fairs have been held there since that year. The 2019 fair will be held July 24-28 at the fairgrounds, U.S. Highway 16 west of Tomah, Wisconsin.
