The University of Nebraska Omaha’s competitive collegiate speech team will be in Decatur for a showcase event on Saturday, March 30, 2019, at the Sears Center. Performances will begin at 5:30 p.m.
This is the 13th year the team has performed in Decatur prior to leaving for national competition. Head coach Abbie Farrens Syrek said “our team always looks forward to coming to my hometown where they are enthusiastically welcomed year after year. “
Even if you can’t get to the performance at 5:30, you can stop in anytime during the evening, Syrek said. There is no admission charge, though there will be a freewill offering to help the team pay for expenses at the annual American Forensics Association National Individual Events Tournament which will be held April 5-7 at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
The team just won its fifth consecutive state championship at the elite Nebraska Intercollegiate Forensics Association’s state tournament and is currently ranked sixth in the nation. The team is continuing a streak that has seen them earn Top 10 recognition nationally in each of the last 11 years.
The Night Before Nationals event will feature a variety of presentations including poetry, prose, after-dinner speaking, drama interpretation, duo interpretation, extemporaneous speaking, program of interpretation, communication analysis, impromptu, informative and persuasive speaking. The team will showcase selected pieces during its performance in Decatur that have qualified for national competition over the course of the competitive year.
