Bergan rolls in C2 playoffs on a 64-20 win over Tekamah-Herman

Tiger senior Luke Wakehouse capped a record-setting season with 142 yards and two touchdowns in Tekamah-Herman’s 64-20 loss at Archbishop Bergan last Friday. Wakehouse became the school’s single season rushing leader with 1,413 yards and in touchdowns with 20.

It wasn’t exactly what they came for.

Tekamah-Herman’s football team came home from Fremont Friday night stinging from a 64-20 beating from Archbishop Bergan.

The loss ended the Tigers’ season at 3-6. Bergan improved to 6-2 and was one of four District 2 teams headed into playoff action on Friday, visiting Battle Creek. Unbeaten Oakland-Craig has the number-two overall seed in the 16-team bracket and hosts Hartington Cedar Catholic. BRLD—whose only loss came to O-C in the regular season finale, 40-30—has the number-five seed and will host Wilber-Clatonia at Bancroft. Yutan was the last team into the playoffs and will visit top-seeded Sutton. The state championship game is set for Nov. 25 at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln.

Last Friday’s game also was the last in Tiger colors for seniors Clay Beaumont, Luke Wakehouse, Chauncey Rogers, Jordan Derra, Kasey Snyder, Gabe Garcia and Jayden Kellogg.

Head coach Graig McElmuray said his seniors have left the program in a better position than they found it.

These kids won seven games as a class in varsity competition,” he said. “While that may seem low, and it is, I can firmly say that they have left the program in a better place then when they found it. Along with last year’s class, and really every class, they have helped the program get to a better place.”

Heedum Field was not that place, however.

Bergan scored touchdowns on its first nine offensive possessions and added a TD on an interception return while rolling to a big win.

Dylan Marchand’s weaving 74-yard interception return ended the first half with Bergan up 45-6 and was the senior defensive back’s second pick of the half. Bergan also took advantage of short field situations created by two lost Tiger fumbles and a failed fake punt to score 39 points in the second quarter alone.

Junior linebacker Garrison Potadle led the beleaguered Tiger defense with 10 tackles, including one in the Bergan backfield. Kody Bitter notched seven stops while Beaumont added six.

The loss took some of the shine off of a record-setting season for Wakehouse. In the last game of his career, he gained 142 yards on 27 carries and scored two touchdowns. The yardage pushed his season total to 1,413 yards, a new school record for rushing yards in a season. The old mark of 1,294 was set by Preston Weeces in 2005. The two touchdown increased his season count to 20, also setting a new school mark. Dash Cameron set the old mark at 17 in 2014.

Wakehouse’s first score, an 18-yard burst off the left side, capped an eight-play, 48-yard drive which began when an onside kick attempt by Bergan rolled dead without covering the required 10 yards. The TD tied the score at 6-6 with 76 seconds left in the first quarter.

Bergan’s power up front soon took command. All-state running back Ethan Villwok scored three of his four TDs during the second quarter onslaught. Villwok led his team with 133 yards on 14 carries, but sat out the rest of the contest after scoring on a 29-yard run early in the third period.

Wakehouse’s second score, a five-yard run, ended a 62-yard, eight play drive as the game entered the fourth quarter.

Dawson Schram recovered a Bergan fumble at the Knights’ 30 with just over two minutes of running clock left to give the Tigers one more chance.

Beaumont scored on an option run from five yards out on the last play of the season.
