Rhonda Wildeman from Jennings, Kan., is a fan of the Main Street Dugout Pizza and Grill in Grainfield, Kan., and ¬not just because it’s in the family.

“My sister-in-law has a great place to eat,” she wrote. “She usually has a daily special and is well known for their pizzas. She makes wonderful pies. Check it out. It’s pretty good.”

You might check out the Mac and Cheese Burger, the Bacon Kraut Burger, BBQ Jalapeno Burger, a Brisket Philly or the Baked Potato Pizza, too.

The Dugout is at 223 Main St. Christy Rathgeber is the boss.

My extended family was in Hastings, Neb., this summer for the annual Eight-Man All-Star Football game. After the game, our group of 14 walked into Barrel Bar at 9:30 on a Saturday night. Some places might have responded with a loud groan, but not Barrel Bar.

We ordered a variety of burgers, ham and cheese sandwiches, taco salad and chicken breasts. Service, mostly from one server, was outstanding. We finished eating and were on our way by 10:30. The food was excellent and the service superb.

Barrel Bar is at 1200 E. South St. and has been around since 1963. Hours are 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Sundays.

We need to refill the mailbag. Let me know where you like to eat, anywhere served by Midwest Messenger. That means all of Nebraska and Kansas, western Iowa and border counties in Wyoming and Colorado, and no chains unless based in these areas.

Schools open again in the next few weeks. That means football and volleyball games aren’t far behind. Do you have a favorite spot to hit before or after the games? Why is it your favorite? What keeps you coming back?
