The USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service crop progress and condition report for the week ending Aug. 25

NEBRASKA

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 1 percent very short, 8 short, 76 adequate, and 15 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 1 percent very short, 8 short, 77 adequate, and 14 surplus.

Field Crops Report

Corn condition rated 2 percent very poor, 5 poor, 19 fair, 57 good, and 17 excellent. Corn dough was 80 percent, behind 93 last year and 90 for the five-year average. Dented was 36 percent, well behind 56 last year, and behind 49 average.

Soybean condition rated 1 percent very poor, 5 poor, 21 fair, 61 good, and 12 excellent. Soybeans blooming was 97 percent, near 100 both last year and average. Setting pods was 83 percent, behind 95 last year and 94 average.

Sorghum condition rated 1 percent very poor, 1 poor, 16 fair, 66 good, and 16 excellent. Sorghum headed was 94 percent, behind 99 last year, and near 98 average. Coloring was 21 percent, well behind 59 last year and 48 average.

Oats harvested was 97 percent, near 100 last year and 99 average.

Dry edible bean condition rated 10 percent very poor, 18 poor, 16 fair, 49 good, and 7 excellent. Dry edible beans blooming was 98 percent. Setting pods was 92 percent.

Pasture and Range Report

Pasture and range conditions rated 1 percent very poor, 3 poor, 14 fair, 65 good, and 17 excellent.

KANSAS

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 4 percent very short, 13 short, 70 adequate, and 13 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 3 percent very short, 15 short, 73 adequate, and 9 surplus.

Field Crops Report

Corn condition rated 5 percent very poor, 11 poor, 33 fair, 41 good, and 10 excellent. Corn dough was 84 percent, behind 91 last year and 89 for the five-year average. Dented was 51 percent, behind 69 last year and 58 average. Mature was 7 percent, behind 22 last year and 14 average.

Soybean condition rated 4 percent very poor, 8 poor, 35 fair, 46 good, and 7 excellent. Soybeans blooming was 90 percent, behind 98 last year and 95 average. Setting pods was 73 percent, behind 88 last year and 81 average. Dropping leaves was 1 percent, near 3 last year and 2 average.

Sorghum condition rated 2 percent very poor, 8 poor, 27 fair, 54 good, and 9 excellent. Sorghum headed was 81 percent, behind 92 last year and 89 average. Coloring was 23 percent, behind 36 last year and 32 average.

Cotton condition rated 2 percent very poor, 9 poor, 42 fair, 42 good, and 5 excellent. Cotton squaring was 94 percent, behind 100 last year, and equal to average. Setting bolls was 69 percent, behind 85 last year, but ahead of 64 average. Bolls opening was 2 percent, behind 7 last year and 8 average.

Pasture and Range Report

Pasture and range conditions rated 1 percent very poor, 5 poor, 24 fair, 59 good, and 11 excellent.

IOWA

Topsoil moisture condition was rated 3 percent very short, 20 percent short, 75 percent adequate and 2 percent surplus. The Northwest District was the only district where topsoil moisture condition became drier this past week. Subsoil moisture condition was rated 4 percent very short, 20 percent short, 74 percent adequate and 2 percent surplus.

Field Crops Report

Seventy-six percent of the corn crop has reached the dough stage, 11 days behind last year and nine days behind the five-year average. Twenty-one percent of the crop reached the dented stage, two weeks behind last year and nine days behind average. Corn condition rated 65 percent good to excellent.

Nearly all the soybean crop has started to bloom at 96 percent statewide, 11 days behind average. Eighty-four percent of the crop has started setting pods, 17 days behind last year and 12 days behind average. Soybean condition rated 62 percent good to excellent.

The third cutting of alfalfa hay reached 49 percent, 11 days behind average. Hay condition rated 57 percent good to excellent.

Pasture and Range Report

Pasture condition improved slightly for the first time in seven weeks and rated 44 percent good to excellent. There were no reported livestock issues this past week.

MISSOURI

Topsoil moisture supply was rated 1 percent very short, 7 percent short, 77 percent adequate, and 15 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 1 percent very short, 6 percent short, 88 percent adequate, and 5 percent surplus.

Field Crops Report

Corn dough progressed to 84 percent. Corn dented progressed to 43 percent. Corn condition was rated at 5 percent very poor, 17 percent poor, 39 percent fair, 34 percent good, and 5 percent excellent.

Soybeans blooming progressed to 88 percent this week, while soybeans setting pods progressed to 65 percent, 19 percentage points behind last year. Soybean condition was rated at 3 percent very poor, 11 percent poor, 38 percent fair, 41 percent good, and 7 percent excellent.

Cotton setting bolls progressed to 96 percent. Cotton bolls opening progressed to 13 percent. Cotton condition was rated at 9 percent very poor, 12 percent poor, 53 percent fair, and 26 percent good.

Rice headed progressed to 86 percent this week, 11 percentage points behind last year. Rice condition was rated at 3 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 37 percent fair, 38 percent good, and 16 percent excellent.

Alfalfa third cutting progressed to 70 percent.
