While cool temperatures are not necessarily “good” for pests (they need heat units to develop too), conditions that delay growth do leave the crop in a vulnerable stage for a longer period of time.

As corn begins to emerge, be alert to the potential for damage from early season insects such as cutworms, wireworms, white grubs or other insects.

Rain, rain and more rain is my weather update. Until recently spraying had been a slow process. We’d spray for a day or maybe a day and a half, and then it’d rain and fields would need to dry for a couple of days. We finally finished first-pass spraying of some new customers’ fields I added at the last minute. We started making second passes on some of our other customers’ fields. Field conditions aren’t grand, but we at least we aren’t cutting deep ruts across the fields. In several fields we sprayed around large wet holes where most of the corn had drowned anyway.
