CNH Industrial and The Climate Corporation, a subsidiary of Monsanto Company, have formed a partnership that will extend and develop data-sharing capabilities to help farmers with real-time decision-making solutions. CNH Industrial's brands – Case IH and New Holland Agriculture – will provide farmers two-way data connectivity between Advanced Farming Systems and Precision Land Management Connect precision-farming platforms and The Climate Corporation’s Climate FieldView digital platform.

The Farm Service Agency continuously updates its producer-record database. If farmers have unreported changes of address or other contact information, or an old business name on file, changes should be reported to their local FSA office. Changes in the farm operation, such as the addition of a farm by lease or purchase, also need to be reported.

Angus Genetics Inc. recently released two foot-score research studies on expected progeny differences, the first of their kind in the United States for beef cattle. The American Angus Association has been collecting foot scores since 2015, and now has about 12,000 data points. Members have reported scores for claw set and foot angle. The scores are based on a scale from one to nine, with five being ideal for both traits.

The National Alfalfa and Forage Alliance has released the 2018 edition of its “Alfalfa Variety Ratings -- Winter Survival, Fall Dormancy and Pest Resistant Ratings for Alfalfa Varieties.” It is a tool for hay and dairy farmers, university-Extension specialists, agri-business personnel or anyone involved in the production of alfalfa.

Funded in part by an American Sheep Industry Association "Let's Grow" grant, the National Sheep Improvement Program is taking ram selection a step further. The program will put pedigree and performance data at producers’ fingertips with an online searchable database.

In January the U.S. Department of Agriculture reported the U.S. beef-cow herd stood at 31.2 million, an increase of 3.5 percent from 2016. While the beef-herd expansion in 2017 was widely reported and published, the purpose of this article is to step back and consider recent trends in the U.S. beef-cow herd.
