Adverse climatic conditions and conflicts are driving food insecurity in sub-Saharan Africa, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. The “2017 Africa Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition” recently indicated that undernourishment has increased from 20.8 percent to 22.7 percent between 2015 and 2016. That demonstrates the need to build affected communities’ resilience and find peaceful solutions that strengthen food security, according to the organization.

Technologies developed by DuPont Pioneer and the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center will be adapted to cassava and other food-security crops to improve food security, nutrition and economic stability for smallholder farmers and their families. DuPont Pioneer and the Danforth Center have entered into a multi-year partnership, with licensing and research-collaboration agreements.
