GREAT FALLS, Mont. – Saddle your horses and wax your skis for skijoring at the 74th Montana Winter Fair!

Riders may pull up to four skiers in each of the five divisions and a skier may enter their own division twice with two different riders. Teams will run a 300-foot straight course with two jumps and five gates for the skier to maneuver.

Skijoring began in Norway with a skier driving a horse that pulls them over the snow. Our western version involves a horse and a rider in a western saddle with a pulling rope behind the cantle (rigging and rope provided). The skier must provide their own gear, which includes a snow sport approved helmet. No snow will result in cancellation.

The races will be held at the Fergus County Fairgrounds Hwy 191 North just inside the main gate beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26. Team check-in is at noon; races begin at 1 p.m. Registration deadline is Jan. 15 but teams will pay their fees at check-in: Pro-Open – $25; Sport and Novice – $20; Youth – $10; and Pee Wee – $5. Spectators are asked to bring lawn chairs and blankets. Those 14 and older – $5 per person; 13 to 6– $3 per person; 5 and under free.
