Producer Progress Reports: Came Farms

  • Updated

The sun has returned! After many days of gray, cloudy skies and drizzle, we are finally getting to see the sun today.

This also means that the combines can roll again. We so wanted to be done before Thanksgiving, but with the damp past few days, that may be out of reach. We have only received a total of .02 inches of rain since our last report. We are 90 percent done with our double crop soybeans and 55 percent done with our double crop milo.

As soon as harvest is over, we will get all our fall burn downs done. We will probably plant some cover crops after we are all finished up harvesting, too. Other wintertime projects include cleaning up around the edges of the fields and trimming trees.

All the cows are out on milo and corn stalks now. The calves have all had their second round of shots and have been weighed. We are finishing up the electric fence around the last of the triticale and then hauling the calves to it.

As harvest winds down, so does high school football season here. We have four boys that play varsity football between myself and my two brothers. It is very special that our boys get to play together, and we love rooting on our alma mater at the same time. Needless to say, football is always a good topic of discussion at the lunch table. We finished 8-2 on the season, claiming our Regional title, but getting beat at home last Friday in Sectionals in two overtimes. It was a great game! Bill and I both have seniors, so it was a bittersweet ending. Next up, basketball.

Local commodity prices: Cargill in Salina: wheat, $3.73; milo, $3.23; corn, $2.91; soybeans, $8.96.
