Producer Progress Reports: Came Farms

Salina, Kan.

We finished up fall harvest finally. We cut the last field the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. I think all the guys were relieved to have it done. They have started cleaning up all the harvest equipment and getting it ready to be put away. If the winds aren’t too strong, the sprayers are running our fall burn-downs.

All the calves are out on the triticale and the cows are out on the milo and corn stalks. Hauling water is a never-ending job, as is building new fence around the fields we intend to graze next.

This month, we said goodbye to our ranch manager of almost nine years, as he moves on to pursue other opportunities. It will be a work-load adjustment for everyone this winter, as we get use to not having a dedicated cattle guy. Eric will be missed, and we wish him all the best in his future endeavors.

Now that all the yield data is in, Bill has been working on putting together crop insurance paperwork to be submitted. We had a few losses that we will collect on. We must get all the accounting items done before we meet with our accountant in the next two weeks.

Traditionally, we host an After-Harvest party each winter where we invite all the harvest crew to come and celebrate finishing the harvest season. It’s just another chance for us to show our appreciation to our employees for all their long hours during harvest. As our kids are all in school in the fall, we are thankful that we have many retired gentlemen that can come and help us out driving trucks, combines, and grain carts during fall harvest.

Local commodity prices: Cargill in Salina: wheat, $3.96; milo, $3.26; corn, $2.92; soybeans, $9.13. — Darcy Bradley
