POMONA, Kan. — JRI In Demand 254F839 ET, owned by Judd Ranch, Pomona, Kan., was selected by American Gelbvieh Association Futurity members as the winner of the AGA’s 2019 Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity. Judd Ranch’s entry into the 2019 Breeder’s Choice Balancer Bull Futurity, JRI CEO 254F38, was voted runner-up from among a highly competitive group of Balancer bulls.
“These two honors mean a great deal to us since it is our fellow Gelbvieh and Balancer breeders who belong to the AGA’s Futurity who determine the winners and runners-up of the Futurity,” stated Dave Judd of Judd Ranch.
“As a member of the AGA’s Futurity group, each of us breeders has this ideal Gelbvieh or Balancer bull in our head and we vote for the bulls that most closely fit our ideal. We are looking for that bull that not only looks super good on paper — pedigree and performance — but excels in phenotype. I always to for the bull that is the most complete package.”
According to the AGA’s Futurity rules, each of the 52 Futurity members can vote for up to three bulls – their first-place, second-place and third-place bulls – in each division. The bull that receives the most votes is the winner. The bulls receiving the second-most and the third-most votes are deemed the runners-up. There is only one Futurity winner and two Futurity runners up.
Judd Ranch’s entry into the 2019 Breeder’s Choice Gelbvieh Bull Futurity that found favor with fellow breeders was a Jan. 19, 2018, homozygous black, homozygous polled son of JRI Secret Instinct. Posting an 88 lb. birth weight and an actual weaning weight of 970 lbs., JRI In Demand is an ET son out of the high-performing Judd Ranch donor female JRI Ms Poppy Love 254Z72. Ms Poppy Love is a JRI Pop A Top daughter and has earned Dam of Merit status every year of eligibility.
“Per the AGA’s Futurity rules, our Gelbvieh Bull Futurity winner had to sell in the National Sale,” Dave explains. “But the good news is that we have several full brothers and half-brothers still at the ranch, and they will be offered in our March 2 sale at the ranch.”
Judd Ranch’s runner-up in the 2019 Breeder’s Choice Balancer Bull Futurity, JRI CEO 254F38, is a homozygous black, homozygous polled son of Capitol Hill 516C. Born Feb. 19, 2018, JRI CEO 254F38 is out of the genetically power-packed JRI Clementine 254Z8, a daughter of JRI Pop A Top and another acclaimed AGA Dam of Merit, earning the honor every year of eligibility, 2016-2018.
“We couldn’t be happier with both Futurity wins,” Dave summarizes. “Winning the Futurity isn’t just one person’s opinion; it’s the opinion of your fellow seedstock producers in the breed.
“We will see what other cattlemen think of JRI CEO and the brothers and half-brothers of In Demand when they sell in our sale at the ranch March 2.”
Judd Ranch’s 41st Gelbvieh, Balancer and Red Angus bull sale will be conducted at the ranch at Pomona. Of the 303 bulls selling, 99 percent are sired by breed-leading AI sires and 287 of the 303 bulls are homozygous polled.
