Know your crop’s opponents to build yield

By Wendy Sweeter
Corn growers who know their crop’s
opponents have a better start on
building yield.
Syngenta Agronomy Service
Representative Wally West said South
Dakota corn growers mainly have to
focus on controlling waterhemp, kochia
and marestail. However, cocklebur and
sunflowers have also been a problem in
the 2021 season.
He noted that 2019 was extremely
wet for a lot of growers, while 2021
was extremely dry.
“It’s important that a herbicide like
Acuron® demonstrates strong control
in both of those environments,” West
said. “Coming out of 2019, we knew
that with all the prevent plant acres
in our area that we were going to
be fighting weeds for a number of
years and that has really come to bear,
unfortunately.”
West said that corn growers can use
Acuron for powerful weed control,
proven crop safety, longest-lasting
residual and ultimately higher yield
potential. Acuron contains four active
ingredients that provide control of over
70 different weed species, including
grasses and broadleaf weeds.
Those four active ingredients and
longest-lasting residual do a good job
of controlling weeds in South Dakota.
West notes that while some weeds
have developed a resistance to
glyphosate, it continues to be effective
on grasses. Those grasses can also
cause problems in the corn crop.
With dialed-in rates, Acuron is
a safe herbicide option to use in a
corn-soybean rotation because of the
10-month rotational restriction for
soybeans. On other crops, like wheat or
sunflowers, the rotational restriction is
18 months.
“Those 10 months has proven to
be a very robust and very accurate
rotational restriction without issues
when rotating to soybeans,” West said.
University and Syngenta research
trials show the Acuron outperforms the
competition, and the yield advantage
typically falls between 5 and 15 bushels
per acre*.
“We have done our homework to
be able to quantify what that yield
advantage is. It’s very real and our
direction of helping our producers
find more bushels through the use of
herbicides has gone over very well,”
West said.
