Seeding a nurse crop of oats with alfalfa is less common than it once was; cons tend to outweigh pros.
Straight seedings of alfalfa or mixed-hay are generally preferred, as compared to seeding with a nurse crop. Harvest is usually earlier. A nurse crop can also reduce first-year forage yield and result in a thinner stand.
